It's Midnight, She Said

The wind beat mercilessly against the shutters and the rain pelted the roof. You could feel a draft run through the entire room and you could barely feel the little warmth that was given from the small fire. We just had to make the night and we could finally make it past the river and away from our troubles. She was huddled near me with hands outreached towards the flames trying to keep warm. I hadn't felt my nose in days, and I was frozen to my soul.
We ignored the shadows we saw. Our eyes stayed on the flame that was hardly there. We heard whispers that may, or may not have been more than the wind, and touches caused by not-so-normal gusts of air. I cannot wait for this to be over. We're so close.
"We never should have left," she said.
"I know." I rubbed my hands together trying to warm them. "I'm sorry..."
She let out a soft sigh and said, "It's okay. We both decided on this."
"I just wish I didn'-"
